    OVERVIEW
    Vintage item
This pair of decoys was hand carved and hand painted by Peter Codd (1930-1991), owner of Hutch Decoy Carving, Ltd., in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Codd was an amateur artist; when he retired, he bought out a small decoy carver in Maryland. The sale included generations-old decoy patterns and Codd then combined his painting talent with carving decoys. He exhibited at all major decoy shows and festivals on the East and West coasts and in Europe and his works are collected internationally.
The wood duck drake measures 8 inches long, 3 inches wide at the breast and 3 1/4 inches tall. There is a small amount of paint wear to the head, the underside of the tail feathers and three tiny nicks along the duck's right side. It's solid sugar pine and weighs 5 1/2 ounces. The hen's measurements and weight are the same, with a tiny bit of paint wear to the edge of the tail feathers. Both are in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips, and both are beautifully, accurately painted, with glass eyes set against a white teardrop on the hen and a circular red patch on the drake.
The circular brand on the bottoms was burned into the wood. In addition, Codd hand signed each one "Hutch," dated them 1982 and labeled the species and gender of each. These handsome quarter-size decoys are a wonderful find, pleasing to the collector and decorator alike.
